Every Yorkie needs an individual prevention plan from their veterinarian.

Heartworm prevention should be planned with your veterinarian. In the United States, the American Heartworm Society recommends year-round prevention, including in colder climates. Reducing mosquito exposure is useful, but it does not replace prescribed preventive medicine.

Choose prevention with your veterinarian

Preventives come in oral, topical and injectable forms. Your veterinarian can choose a suitable product and schedule for your Yorkie. Give each dose exactly as prescribed, and contact your veterinarian about suspected side effects.

What if a dose is missed?

A missed or late dose can leave a dog unprotected. Contact your veterinarian promptly if a dose is missed, late, spat out or vomited; follow their instructions for resuming prevention and follow-up testing rather than waiting several months.

Plan regular heartworm testing

The American Heartworm Society recommends annual heartworm testing for dogs, even when prevention is given year-round. Puppies and dogs starting or restarting prevention may need a different initial testing schedule. Your veterinarian should set that schedule based on your dog’s age and prevention history.
