Dealing with my Dogs Separation Anxiety
Barking, pacing, house soiling or damage around departures can be signs that a Yorkie is distressed, but those behaviors do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.
Some dogs become unsettled when they see keys, shoes or other departure cues.
Note when the behavior happens and speak with your veterinarian, especially if it is new or worsening.
Separation-related distress has different causes and triggers; it is not simply proof that an owner has shown too much affection. Pain, illness, changes in routine and difficulty being alone can all need consideration. A veterinarian can assess possible medical contributors and help plan behavior support. Treat distress as a welfare concern, not disobedience. Do not punish barking, damage or accidents. A safe management plan may include arranging suitable company while you seek help, rather than repeatedly leaving your dog in a situation they cannot cope with. There is no guaranteed quick fix.
Build comfort gradually
With veterinary or qualified behavior-professional guidance, practice absences short enough for your dog to stay comfortable. Increase the challenge only when the dog is coping; stop and seek advice if distress appears. Do not force a dog to remain alone until they give up.
Create a comfortable routine
A predictable routine and a safe resting area can support your Yorkie, but a clean bed alone does not treat separation anxiety. Use reward-based training, suitable enrichment and an individualized plan. Your veterinarian may also discuss medication when appropriate; do not choose a drug or supplement on your own. Cornell explains why treatment depends on the cause and why quick-fix promises are unreliable.
