Dealing with your Yorkie Separation Anxiety
Barking, pacing, house soiling or damage while your Yorkie is alone can signal distress, but these signs do not establish a diagnosis on their own. Ask your veterinarian for help understanding what is happening.
Separation-related distress deserves care and assessment, rather than treating your Yorkie as a nuisance.
Some dogs become anxious when they notice departure cues, such as keys or shoes. Others show distress only after someone leaves. Video of your dog during an absence can help your veterinarian assess the pattern and distinguish it from reactions to outside activity or incomplete house training.

A close bond does not, by itself, establish the cause of separation anxiety. The American Animal Hospital Association explains that attachment and separation distress are not the same thing. Avoid blaming affection or trying to make a frightened dog cope through repeated distressing absences. A tailored plan may include management and reward-based training.
Work with your veterinarian on a plan suited to your Yorkie and your household.
These approaches can support that plan; they are not guaranteed quick cures.
Build comfort gradually
Practice absences short enough that your dog stays calm, and increase them gradually. If distress appears, make the next step easier and seek professional guidance. Do not force a panicking dog to remain in a crate.
Make daily care supportive
Provide an appropriate routine and a comfortable, safe resting area, but do not expect bedding alone to resolve anxiety. Seek veterinary help for escape injuries, sudden behavior changes or persistent distress. Treatment may involve behavior modification and, when appropriate, veterinarian-prescribed medication. See AAHA’s guidance on separation anxiety.
