Can I Have a Yorkie If I Have Allergies?

Some people with allergies can live with a Yorkshire Terrier, but no dog breed is guaranteed to be safe for someone with a dog allergy. Low shedding does not make a dog allergen-free.

Proteins in a dog’s dander, saliva and urine can trigger allergic reactions or worsen asthma. Coat length and shedding do not reliably predict an individual person’s response. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology explains why there are no truly hypoallergenic breeds.

Discuss your individual risk

If you have dog allergies or asthma, talk with an allergist before bringing a dog home. An allergist can identify your triggers and discuss whether treatment and practical changes may help. A brief visit with a dog cannot guarantee that living together will be comfortable or safe; see ACAAI’s pet-allergy guidance.

Reduce exposure with a tailored plan

If you already live with a dog, keeping the bedroom pet-free, using a HEPA air cleaner and having someone without dog allergies brush the dog outdoors may reduce exposure. These steps do not remove all allergens. Work with your clinician on a plan suited to your symptoms.
